After beating Oakland murder charge, defendants pleads no contest to misdemeanor manslaughter
23+ min ago (208+ words) OAKLAND " At one point during his case, Kevin Mak was looking at the very real possibility of a life in prison sentence, accused of running over a 66-year-old man during a downtown dispute. By the case's end, Mak, 44, had completely avoided prison, or even a felony conviction. He took his case to trial, winning an acquittal on murder but a hung jury on manslaughter, only to plead no contest to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for a one-year probation term, according to court records. The incident occurred in March 2022, on the 800 block of Alice Street in Oakland. Six months later, Mak, at the time facing murder charges, was released from jail after his lawyer argued there were extenuating circumstances that made the case different from most murder prosecutions. After the trial, one woman who served on the jury agreed to an interview,…...

Chatman had his 4-year-old son with him at the murder scene, where she bled to death. Chatman was sentenced to death, but three years ago, the DA asked a judge to remove the death sentence as part of statewide judicial and prison reform efforts. Chatman was now to serve life without parole. "We always thought he would be executed, that was our intent. That was our hope. To now Segway to…...
Warriors instant analysis: Spencer, Melton’s big nights not enough to hold off Sixers
1+ hour, 45+ min ago (813+ words) PHILADELPHIA " Missing their two best players and facing a Sixers team wearing throwback 2001 jerseys, the Warriors paid tribute to the early-2000s Warriors by losing 99-98 and falling under .500, albeit in a spirited effort. VJ Edgecombe won the game for the Sixers on a putback, and De'Anthony Melton's last-second layup on the leak-out was blocked at the buzzer by Tyrese Maxey. Steph Curry did not make the trip as he recovered from a quad injury, and Jimmy Butler was ruled out with knee soreness." Their absence was sorely, sorely, sorely felt in a first quarter that saw the bottom fall out. The Warriors missed 14 consecutive shots at one point, scoring just 10 points. It was the fewest the team has scored in a quarter in 11 seasons under Steve Kerr." It somehow got even worse late in the second quarter. With 4:33 left in the…...
