Harriette Cole: I dread going out of my apartment but I don’t want to live anywhere else
1+ hour, 23+ min ago (543+ words) DEAR HARRIETTE: I'm a 75-year-old woman who has lived in the same charming walk-up apartment in New York City for more than 40 years. This place has seen me through marriage, motherhood, widowhood and every season of my life. Recently, the three flights of stairs have become almost impossible for me to manage. My knees ache, I get winded easily, and I find myself dreading leaving the apartment because I know I'll have to climb back up. My doctor has recommended I look for housing with an elevator or move closer to family, but the thought of leaving my neighborhood, my friends, my routines, my sense of independence " well, it breaks my heart. I can't imagine myself anywhere else. At the same time, I know staying here isn't sustainable or safe. I've even tripped once or twice on the stairs, which…...
Miss Manners: My friend’s new partner is getting a reputation as a difficult guest
1+ hour, 50+ min ago (520+ words) DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have a widowed longtime friend who is like a family member to me. He attends all our holiday meals. However, his partner of several years has become a problem. She became aggressive at our daughter's engagement party, arguing with my best friend over politics. She wouldn't back down when asked to change the subject. She even demanded that my friend leave my house, which of course I would not allow. This Thanksgiving, we were at the home of my son's in-laws, who graciously included my friend and his partner. The partner was on notice that this group did not like to talk politics and had different beliefs than hers. Even so, she again started talking about uncomfortable subjects, and I was asked to intervene. She is getting a reputation for being difficult. I already invited them…...
Dear Abby: My granddaughter is a nightmare, and timeouts are no use
2+ hour, 23+ min ago (530+ words) DEAR ABBY: Our daughter and her family live an hour from us. She got a late start on marriage and children; their girls are 10 and 8. The little one is sweet and shy, but the 10-year-old is a nightmare to be around. She's very smart but also manipulative. She lies, cheats and steals. She is rude and seems to always do exactly the opposite of what an adult tells her to do. If her parents see her being sassy or ugly, they will put her in timeout for 10 minutes, but nothing ever changes. None of their neighbors wants this child at their home. To make matters worse, she has begun puberty. We can't stand being around this 10-year-old because it wears us out. We are both in fair health. We love our daughter and would like to have a good relationship…...
Oakland organization asks for donations ahead of toy giveaway
4+ hour, 1+ min ago (421+ words) A toy for every child: that's the hope of this holiday season for some Bay Area community organizations. But this year, some East Bay groups are finding it challenging to make that a reality. Gia Vang reports. One of them, Oakland's Little Saigon's "Trybe" Community Space, just had a setback when someone broke into their building just after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. A grinch forced his way in and snatched up whatever he found after hurling his body through the building doors. It's all repairs the nonprofit might now be on the hook for, pinching the organization even more just before their Christmas programs that include a toy giveaway. "We haven't gotten as many toys as we've gotten in the past," said Chien Nyugen with Trybe. "A lot of folks are dealing with hard times to make ends meet." "We're also just flat…...

Bellying up to the history of San Francisco's wildest bar
4+ hour, 56+ min ago (584+ words) It seemed pretty much like living in a zoo," said Woody LaBounty, leaning on a rail of a pier at San Francisco's Northern waterfront. Or drinking in a zoo." The president of San Francisco Heritage was of course referring to one of the city's strangest bars of lore that once existed nearby " Abe Warner's Cobweb Palace " a drinking establishment that operated on the former Meigg's Wharf on the city's waterfront from 1856 to 1893. Abe Warner had a miner bird, he had a bear, he had a raccoon," laughed LaBounty, who has long been fascinated with the bar's legend. But he didn't have a broom apparently." Perhaps the most peculiar item in the bar was Warner himself, a New York-born butcher who came to San Francisco in 1849 and opened a butcher shop on Sansome Street. But soon after he threw himself into…...
