The Black Friday shopping bonanza was well underway Friday in Palo Alto, where shoppers said it feels less like a day of huge savings and more like a mixed bag. Downtown Palo Alto was a festive sight, with the Christmas tree, decorations and a steady stream of shoppers. At Stanford Shopping Center earlier Friday, people told NBC Bay Area they found some great sales but since prices were already higher than usual, those sales pretty much made it a wash. Oakland Ballers hosting free movie night at Raimondi Park
38+ min ago (357+ words) Cold weather has been no match for the Oakland Ballers community. Ballers fans, neighbors and family members are coming together at Raimondi Park for the baseball team's "Town Flicks" series, in which Pixar films are shown on the video board and folks can take in the movie from the outfield grass. The first showing of "Coco" ran earlier this month, when the Ballers gave away 1,000 free tickets. Saturday, the Ballers will double the capacity with 2,000 free tickets as folks gather in the outfield to watch "Inside Out," Pixar's hit animated film featuring Amy Poehler. The Ballers' mission "has always been about more than baseball," said co-founder Paul Freedman. "Being able to host Little League games, high school tournaments and free community movie nights with this "Town Flicks' initiative is an integral part of the revitalization of our historic ballpark." The…...

A great column by Torrey Snow ("What a federal shift on housing policy means for Maryland," Nov. 26), and it coincidentally came on the heels of my reading of an article in the New York Times about how San Francisco is addressing the homelessness issue. One would have to applaud the initiative of San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, in a city with a quarter of a million more people than Baltimore. I grew up in Baltimore City (Northeast), and my whole career has been city-based. Mayor Lurie's approach is a refreshing class study in organization and imagination. My beloved city used to have both " dollar…...
Mailbag: Big 12 legacy teams exposed, Big Ten night games, new Pac-12 vs. old Pac-12, Cal’s coaching search and more

Or hit me n the social media platform X: @WilnerHotline Some questions have been edited for clarity and brevity. Do you find it ironic that Big 12 fans spent 10 years trashing the Pac-12, saying it was the weakest conference, and now former Pac-12 teams are carrying the Big 12? " @Haywire1120 The Hotline can"t quantify the duration or degree of "trashing" that took place from Big 12 fans pre-realignment, but in one respect, the criticism was justified: The Pac-12 sent just three teams to the College Football playoff from 2014-23: Oregon in 2014 and Washington in 2016 and 2023. Meanwhile, the…...
Google’s AI progress drives MediaTek to best week since 2002
1+ hour, 50+ min ago (419+ words) (Bloomberg/Sangmi Cha) " MediaTek Inc. shares posted their best week since 2002, as artificial intelligence advances at its client Google help reshape the growth outlook for the Taiwanese chipmaker. The stock rose for a fifth-straight day Friday in Taipei, taking its weekly gain to 22%, on investor enthusiasm over Google's latest Gemini model and AI chip deals. MediaTek has reportedly partnered with the Alphabet Inc. unit on design of tensor processing units, seen as a potential rival to Nvidia Corp. chips in AI applications. Known for its smartphone chips, MediaTek has suffered from a cloudy outlook for end-product demand as well as margin pressure due to competition and high development costs. The AI news has brought relief for the shares, which are still down 1% on the year. China business remains tough into 2026, yet "Google TPU upside should offset the smartphone headwind in…...
49ers’ defense has penchant for red zone takeaways; McCaffrey resumes practicing
1+ hour, 53+ min ago (652+ words) SANTA CLARA " The 49ers like to invoke the football axiom of "defending every blade of grass." Their defense is doing much more, however, when backed up to its own goal line. Imagine an'old man yammering, "GET OFF MY LAWN!" Ji'Ayir Brown's interception in the end zone Sunday, on first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, was the 49ers' latest score-saving takeaway. He would later come away with another interception, at the 49ers' 22-yard line, to springboard him to NFC Player of the Week honors on Wednesday. Such clutch plays could be required again on Sunday, when the 49ers (8-4) try to win in Cleveland for the first time since 1984, which would snap just a four-game skid. More than likely, the 49ers will have to pry the ball from two Browns rookies: quarterback Shedeur Sanders and running back Quinshon Judkins. Whereas Sanders got intercepted once in last Sunday's victorious…...
