34+ min ago (274+ words) Today is Wednesday, Dec. 3, the 337th day of 2025. There are 28 days left in the year. On Dec. 3, 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter ordered the armed services to open all military jobs to women, removing the final barriers that had kept women from serving in combat. In 1947, the Tennessee Williams play "A Streetcar Named Desire" opened on Broadway. In 1967, a surgical team in Cape Town, South Africa, led by Dr. Christiaan Barnard, performed the first human heart transplant on Louis Washkansky, who lived 18 days with the donated organ from a 25-year-old woman who had died in a traffic accident. In 1979, 11 people were killed in a crush of fans at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum, where the British rock group The Who was performing. In 1984, a cloud of methyl isocyanate gas escaped from a pesticide plant operated by a Union Carbide subsidiary in Bhopal, India, causing…...

Warriors give Thunder everything they can handle in spirited effort that falls just short
3+ hour, 4+ min ago (936+ words) SAN FRANCISCO " The Thunder arrived in San Francisco a juggernaut, a locomotive barreling toward a win total that may be unequalled." But before the defending champions turned the host Warriors into Oklahoma City's 21st victory of the season with a thrilling 124-112 win on Tuesday night, Golden State coach Steve Kerr made sure to note that he was no stranger to such dominance." After all, Kerr had been a key rotation player on Michael Jordan's 72-10 Chicago Bulls of 1996. Two decades later, he had then coached the 73-9 Warriors, where prime Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and the death lineup tore up the league." When equating Oklahoma City's current-day dominance with those dynastic forces, he pointed his finger at a shared commonality." "A team mindset of zero agendas," Kerr said. "Just win every night, and obviously great talent. But I think high IQ…...

Harriette Cole: I’m going home to people who think I’m a big-city success
4+ hour, 32+ min ago (561+ words) DEAR HARRIETTE: This entire year has been a struggle for me. I'm a freelancer, and business is down dramatically. I can hardly pay my bills. I rarely talk about it, but the holidays are approaching, and I cannot show up the way I usually do with gifts for everyone. I barely have the cash to get to my hometown to be with the family. The thing is, everyone thinks of me as the successful one, the one who moved to the big city and made it. I haven't made a thing this year other than more debt. How can I manage expectations with family without having to explain my situation? I just want to be with them. I don't want to be interrogated. DEAR LEAN TIMES: Contact the member of your family you are closest to and explain your situation…...
Miss Manners: My co-workers don’t seem to realize what I do for a living
5+ hour, 10+ min ago (534+ words) DEAR MISS MANNERS: As part of my job as a news reporter, I spend a great deal of time on the telephone. The conversations I have require a lot of concentration. Often, I have been waiting all day to hear from someone and am up against a strict deadline when he or she finally calls. I must answer when the phone rings. Many times, other members of the staff tend to congregate in my office and chat " sometimes including me in the conversation, and other times just gathering and talking near the fax machine, which happens to be in my office. When the phone rings and I begin talking, my co-workers do not decrease the volume of their own conversations (which are not professional in nature) and do not leave the room. I am left stuttering on the phone and…...
5+ hour, 34+ min ago (497+ words) DEAR ABBY: I'm struggling with my integrity and an important friendship. "Jerry," the husband of my friend "Beth," came to my house to help with a construction project. After discussing the project, we sat down to visit for a bit. He was very forward with me and overly affectionate. (It's been 10 years since I've had any affection.) He also talked about how affection doesn't have to "mean anything," which I believe is true " to an extent. I told him it was inappropriate, but I didn't stop either of us when Jerry kissed me before leaving. Part of me was thrilled at being kissed again, even though I know it was wrong. I am sure that I won't allow it to happen again. I'm afraid to contact him and deliver that message directly, because there's a chance it wouldn't be a…...

Northern California's coastline has always inspired awe. It is obvious from the rugged cliffs of Big Sur to the fog-draped beaches of Marin. In recent years, this natural beauty has sparked a striking transformation in luxury architecture. Modern coastal homes along the central coast are about blending sophisticated design with the raw energy of the sea. And the results are nothing short of breathtaking. The current wave of luxury coastal architecture emphasizes clean lines, open spaces, and natural materials. Architects are leaning into minimalism, letting the dramatic scenery take center stage. Black Friday shooting at Valley Fair mall renews debate: Are California’s juvenile laws too lax?
8+ hour, 16+ min ago (823+ words) The 17-year-old boy walked across Valley Fair shopping mall on Black Friday, police said, accompanied by a young woman, her baby in a stroller and a loaded semi-automatic handgun. When he encountered a man in rival gang colors on the mall's second floor, police said, nothing seemed to deter him: not his recent arrest and probation on a weapons charge, not the mall's ubiquitous surveillance cameras and not the potential of hitting innocent shoppers on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The violent outburst, which caused injuries, but not death, has renewed the debate over California's juvenile justice system and poses the question: Would harsher legal consequences for young offenders deter violent crimes or is this an example of adolescent impulsivity that needs more mercy, understanding and rehabilitation? At a news conference Monday " three days after the…...
