After bowl streak snapped, San Jose State looks to rebuild for another run in 2026
27+ min ago (1153+ words) After falling far short of expectations in 2025, the San Jose State football program will have a very different look next fall. The Spartans, picked to finish third in the Mountain West preseason media poll, went 3-9 and finished in a three-way tie for ninth place, finishing ahead of only Colorado State. San Jose State's unprecedented run of three straight bowl appearances was snapped, and head coach Ken Niumatalolo, who just completed his second season with the Spartans, will have a vastly different-looking staff and roster in 2026. On the field, the Spartans will have a new quarterback to succeed senior Walker Eget, the defense will lose two-time all-conference linebacker Jordan Pollard, and star receiver Danny Scudero might consider another trip to the transfer portal. The Spartans also are expected to sign a new kicker. Niumatalolo's coaching staff is undergoing an overhaul. Derrick…...

One of the Sharks’ biggest problems might not be solved this season
2+ hour, 48+ min ago (883+ words) There are a few reasons why Macklin Celebrini should be considered for the Hart Memorial Trophy this season if the Sharks somehow make the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2019. But here's one: When Celebrini has had at least one point in a game, the Sharks have won almost twice as often as they've lost. When Celebrini has been held off the scoresheet, not only have the Sharks failed to win a game so far this year, but their offense has often gone completely silent. Such was the case again Friday as Celebrini and the Sharks' top line were mostly held in check in a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars. Collin Graf continued his solid play of late by scoring his fourth goal of the season in the second period, but San Jose didn't do much otherwise in what…...
California officials warn against foraging wild mushrooms after deadly poisoning outbreak
3+ hour, 16+ min ago (373+ words) California officials are warning foragers after an outbreak of poisoning linked to wild mushrooms that has killed one adult and caused severe liver damage in several patients, including children. The state poison control system has identified 21 cases of amatoxin poisoning, likely caused by death cap mushrooms, the health department said Friday. The toxic wild mushrooms are often mistaken for edible ones because of their appearance and taste. "Death cap mushrooms contain potentially deadly toxins that can lead to liver failure," Erica Pan, director of the California Department of Public Health, said in a statement. "Because the death cap can easily be mistaken for edible safe mushrooms, we advise the public not to forage for wild mushrooms at all during this high-risk season." One adult has died and several patients have required intensive care, including at least one who might need…...

4+ hour, 11+ min ago (742+ words) OAKLAND " There was hardly room to stand, but Cindi Beam rose to hug every well-wisher who stopped by to say their lives were changed by Coach John Beam. A former Skyline High School tight end donning a letterman jacket wept as his mother whispered into Cindi's ear. The coach's wife returned a deep gaze into the woman's eyes, echoing the kind of direct eye contact that John was known to offer anyone seeking his guidance when he served as the high school's legendary football coach. Beam was fatally shot last month at Laney College's Field House, the athletics facility where he held court and shaped generations of young men. The scene at Everett and Jones Barbecue, where on Friday the sports icon was memorialized, reflected a different town. This was an Oakland that Beam knew well " where sports forges the…...

This year, the butterflies" annual migration will carry a new kind of buzz as smartphones sync with the motions of the monarchs. For the first time in California, citizen scientists like Hernandez can join the effort to track monarch butterflies thanks to Blu+, a new generation of ultra-light tags that communicate using Bluetooth technology.
