MACLA, Montalvo Arts Center partner on new exhibition in San Jose
2+ hour, 46+ min ago (417+ words) Installing an art exhibition can be painstaking, precise work. But it is probably not as dirty as it was for co-curators Alyssarhaye Graciano and Olivia Esparza when they helped artist rafa esparza create an adobe floor for "From Their Hands to Ours," a new exhibition at MACLA's downtown San Jose gallery. They made mud and incorporated straw and manure, and the artist ultimately left the shoes he was wearing embedded in the adobe. One of the surprising aspects of the piece is that visitors can walk around the hardened perimeter. MACLA is at 510 S. First St. in downtown San Jose and is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free except for special events. KEEP ON SKATING: Good weather has helped provide a good start for Downtown Ice, the San Jose Downtown Association's skating rink at the Circle of…...

4+ hour, 15+ min ago (325+ words) The Tennessee Titans (2-11) will take on the San Francisco 49ers (9-4) this Sunday afternoon at Levi's Stadium in their 14th game of the 2025 regular season. Opening the week, the Titans were listed as 12.5-point road underdogs, and that's where the spread remains as of this writing. How does the Titans Wire staff see this Week 15 battle shaking out? Here's a look at our picks and score predictions. Coming off their bye, San Francisco starts fast and takes an early lead behind the combination of Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy, forcing Tennessee to play catch-up. Cam Ward has a solid game and rallies the Titans to within striking distance, but the defense had no answer for McCaffrey, who puts the game away with an explosive touchdown late. The 49ers have a propensity to play close games this season, and although they've increased their margin over…...

4+ hour, 31+ min ago (833+ words) SANTA CLARA " Their ugly-sweater Christmas party is done. The annual team picture is taken. A long-awaited bye in Week 14 has come and gone. Time for the 49ers to finish a playoff push. Currently slotted as the No. 6 seed, the 49ers (9-4) close their regular season with 3-of-4 games at Levi's Stadium, starting Sunday there against the bottom-dwelling Tennessee Titans (2-11). "It's that time of year you've got to show up, otherwise we're going to be out of it." The 49ers are on a three-game win streak, but their season average of 23.6 points per game is scrawnier than any of coach Kyle Shanahan's four previous playoff teams, ranking them mid (16th) in…...
5+ hour, 16+ min ago (688+ words) As California again delays controversial rules requiring homeowners in fire-prone areas to maintain a 5-foot "ember-resistant" zone around their houses, a new report finds that properties that were already close to that standard were much less likely to be destroyed in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January. With ashes still smoldering, researchers with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, an industry-backed group, surveyed 252 homes that had been in the path of the blazes in Altadena and Pacific Palisades. The group determined that of homes with more than half of their 5-foot zone covered in vegetation or other combustible material, 27% were completely destroyed. That share fell to 9% for homes with flammable material covering less than a quarter of the zone. Roy Wright, chief executive of the institute, said the findings reveal that "there are ways that we can narrow…...
Mathews: Voter ID debate distracts from real election threats
6+ hour, 1+ min ago (682+ words) This column is a waste of your time. Because it's about voter ID. And every minute spent on voter ID is a minute lost forever. Unfortunately, California is joining a pointless national debate over whether to require voters to show government-issued identification when they vote. The occasion is a ballot initiative, from San Diego state assemblymember Carl DeMaio, now being circulated for the November 2026 ballot. Under current law, when Californians register to vote, we must affirm under penalty of perjury that we are U.S. citizens and must provide verification information, including our dates-of-birth, Social Security numbers or driver's licenses. The initiative goes further, adding a state constitutional amendment requiring voters to present government-issued identification at the polls, or the last four digits of a government-issued ID when voting by mail. Proponents of the initiative say voter ID is necessary to prevent voter…...
